Suspending logic - An acquired art form

As a dad to a 4 year old, the biggest skill i have had to forcefully acquire, and one that feels second nature to me now.. is 'Suspension of logic'. It is actually ironical, since all your life (spoke like a 60 yr old) you have been trying to view actions and reactions through the lens of logic, and now for succeeding at one of the biggest responsibilities, you have to let go of that instinct and just pray that... you know what.. most days.. I just pray!

The thing is.. my son has this weird OCD thing when it comes to doing things (spoke like a 60 yr old dad to a 30 yr old son..sigh) where he would want to do the same particular set of things in the exact sequence. So I now hold the world record for bathing for the most number of consecutive days in a swimming trunk (in my own bathroom) without hitting a pool or a beach... now you get the drift?

Santa Claus not being real is the least of my problems currently... We have bigger real world problems up north here in Thane! It is sticking to his belief system and logic is what I aspire on a daily basis. I have had to eat with my left hand pretending it is my right hand because when you sit face to face and eat with your son... his right hand is same as my.... you guessed it right.. left hand! I once tried to explain this logic of mirror image to him..and he stopped eating with either hands that day. Abort mission.

Many a times he asks me random questions (which they must do as kids) and i just stare into empty space like it was a solar eclipse.. to think of a non-clever, low IQ, no-logic and harmless response. That's also when I pretend to attend to some major household chores. Being a dad (or for that matter a parent) is richly rewarding when things are going your way... but again it was never meant to be that easy! Rome was not built in a day and this idiom probably does not fit here.

Through this blog, "The Dad Project", I am trying to chronicle my learning, pitfalls and how at the end i couldn't do anything about them. Stay tuned for more.
